I have been throwing money at this Jeep for a bit and have exhausted my supply (pun intended). It appears my cat is plugged and I believe it was caused by my muffler breaking inside and blocking the flow. My plan is to TEMPORARILY replace cat with straight pipe to new muffler and then turndown before the axle but behind the doors. I would like to hear from anyone with experience dumping the exhaust under the Jeep. Thanks in advance.

The safest and healthiest place to exit the exhaust is on either rear corner behind the tires.
Most every CJ I've owned I needed to re-route the tailpipe.
Before spending money make sure your cat is the problem.
Attach a vacuum gauge, hit the gas pedal, if the needle goes down instead of up like it should you have a blockage.

I don't man. Every vehicle I've been in where the back glass was rolled down(4 runner, Blazer, Bronco, etc.) the fumes get sucked up through the back. It's like a vacuum. And this ain't straight pipes either. I've got mine turned down in front of the axles and it's tolerable. A lot better than with the pipes turned out(my opinion). But I still smell like exhaust after wheeling for a while. Can't smell it while driving down the road. Not in my soft top anyway. It's when you're idling or creeping for long periods of time. I also have no cats. Headers to mufflers, then a short turn down.

Most will and have always said, "Don't Do It!" But hey, it's your health and life, be a maverick, do as you see fit, life is short already.......

A couple years ago three local guys wheeling alone got stuck in the mud while offroading. While trying to get out the driver must have passed out, the engine kept running, all three dead! The exhaust dumped under the vehicle.
No matter what folks say, DON'T be a maverick, because it may be someone else you kill besides yourself.

First cut is the deepest... First time taking a sawzall to THIS Jeep. I had to cut between the muffler and the cat to get the pipe out from under. I can see sunshine through the cat so i guess its alright. the muffler is chambered but it sounds like its full of sand and it is very rusted. I put the cat back on and ran around the block. She has no torque in first (obviously) but seems to be doing much better at higher RPMs. I am not trying to be a Maverick I am just trying to make it to Jeep DRIVER from Jeep Owner. I will have the exhaust ran to the driver corner as before.

On the original California cats you could not see through them as they had offset in and out pipes. The newer style were also less restrictive.

This cat was upgraded with the GM 4.3 swap and the air pump deleted. Got quoted $250 for a crappy muffler cat back at a local muffler place. $60 got me what I needed to clamp together a temporary exhaust including the cat. Learning to weld is on my list of things I need to do to own a CJ so I will fix it myself in the near future.

Run it out the back, like OEM. :notworthy:
Trust me on this........
Make sure your 'cat' is ca. certified for your set up, or you will fail SMOG.
Go with Flowmaster mufflers.
Welding thin steel is a skill that must be used daily, or it is lost.

I hope it was obvious that I DON'T really think he should "Be a Maverick". Some folks will listen to us on these exhaust issues and some folks won't. Carbon monoxide poisoning is nothing to play with. Dumping your exhaust under a CJ or any vehicle is asking for trouble. If you smell like exhaust at the end of the day you are in danger and your passengers are as well. The only way to do any exhaust system is to get the exhaust out in the roiling air going past the vehicle. Not out the back, not out the side by the doors in front of the rear wheels, it needs to go out the corners behind the rear wheels to get it in as much turbulent air as possible. That is only my opinion, BUT I'M RIGHT on this one!

Yes on the exhaust exit. I previously mentioned this in the second post in this thread.

Posi - No need to correct me or keep me in line, I am well aware of what you posted, but others have written to exit the exhaust out the rear not specifying the rear corner or the side behind the rear wheels. Exhaust exiting the middle rear will be sucked right back into the cab area. You are right, as am I. My post was another voice in support of your thoughts on the matter. We all have seen post after post on this issue, almost invariably the poster has ignored the advice and dumped the exhaust where they originally decided to put it. This might very well not be the case here.

Your such a maverick... :D
