Build Thread Renegade Resurrection!

Build Thread Renegade Resurrection!
Here is an update from this week, was able to work on it a few nights this week and made some progress. I flipped the tub upside down so I can finish up the welding from the underside. It seems very tight and strong already but I just don't want any of the welds to break.

I am posting more pictures of the rear of the Jeep to show the supports. I purchased them from Classic Enterprises 308 W Stout Rice Lake, WI 54868. I purchased the support panels for the rear roll bar and fender, and the outer body supports from them. I wish I could have purchased more from them they used a heavier gauge of steel and seem to take the weld better than the other panels and I liked that they signed each part MADE IN USA and signed there names. They are an exact fit also!

Got a lot more welding and grinding planned for this weekend, I also have most of next week off, and dad is coming over to help again:chug: I hope to be undercoating and spraying the bed with a spray in bed liner. Will post more pictures as progress is made.

Things are coming along pretty good, I would have got more done today but I didn't have anyone around to help get the tub back on. I need to drill the new holes for the body mounts, and weld the new nuts to the body. I am pretty sure I have them in the right spot but I don't want to weld it down yet. I am a little disappointed on the waviness of the side panels I assume I got them too hot and there was some warping. :( I hope the filler primer will help?? Will probably leave that part to the professionals!:D Well I used 3 cans of primer on the underside and 2 tubes of 3M Seam Sealer. I will be undercoating later this week. I have most of the week off this week so I should be able to make some progress:chug: I know you like pictures so here are a few!

I also got to Power-wash the frame and complete some touch ups. I also welded in some new metal on the front of the tub, this area was the main reason for all my rot. The rain would just pour into the floor pans due to the large holes in both the rain trough and the firewall. I still need to fix the rain trough, that will be later this week. I had it fixed pretty well with liquid weld but with welding the patches in the fire wall the weld got too hot and messed it all up. So back to the drawing board! Will post more pics later!

I noticed in my last post the picture of the frame if you look at the gas tank my fuel line was pinched! I loosened the bolts and yep it was smashed:mad: I have had such a hard time keeping a good idle and loss of power as I was cresting hills. I sure hope this was the gremlin!!!!!

". I need to drill the new holes for the body mounts, and weld the new nuts to the body."
If you weld the nuts to the body you'll take away any adjustment that the body has to mount up to the frame. This is why they had captured nut cages on them, so there was probably 1/4" play in any direction. You should really fab some new nut cages to regain this alignment adjustability.

You are right but I remembered I had already welded them in. Dad came over today and we threw the tub on and we found that it lined up perfect. The lift kit gives us about 3/4 of an inch of play so it was pretty easy. I am really happy with how it all mounted up. We also threw all the seats in to make sure of all the holes were lined up as well. We just pulled the tub off again, I hope this will be the last time. Thank You for your reply, I should have thought about that first, I guess I just got lucky!! We will hit it hard tomorrow.:chug:

As long as it fits up good, that's what counts. Nice job.

Here are some pics from today. We got the bed undercoated, and painted the frame-mostly just a touch up. Started stripping the rear door. We also put the tub back on the frame tonight, we should be hard at it again tomorrow. We will be seam sealing the inside of the tub and we should get it bed-lined, we will also be stripping the hood and fenders. :chug:

 what a awsome job :notworthy:

Lots of work completed today, we got the 1.25 body lift and tub mounted. :chug: We also primed the seams and we sealed all of them as well, we then primed the whole tub. We also finished all the repairs to the inner part of the dash, welding in some patch panels.

I kind of messed our day up, I just couldn't live without the raised JEEP Logo on the sides, I wasn't sure of my skills, like I said before I have never welded nor have I ever completed any body work of this scale. I wasn't sure if I really wanted to cut the new panels, but it was bothering me all night last night, I had to add them to the jeep. So I will add pics of our work! Turned out pretty good, I am glad we took the extra time to get them in.

Tomorrow is the spray in bed liner and starting to strip the rest of the body parts. More pics to come!:chug:

It's lookin' real good. What did you use to strip your paint with?

Thank You guys, I have had a great week with my dad, and we have made a lot of progress. Today we sprayed in the bed liner and we started stripping the hood, 2 fenders and the grill. Wasn't sure what we had under the paint, had some filler but not bad. It took most of the day to get it all stripped the only thing left to do is Bondo a few places and prime it, I will get to work on it this weekend I have to go back to work tomorrow.

We have been using a whole bunch of things to strip the paint, we have been using a grinder with a stripping wheel, and flap sanding wheel. We have also been using the stripping wheel from Home Depot and Walmart on our drills, it is tedious work, it took almost 2 and a half hours to strip off 4 layers of paint on the fenders, my Jeep had a layer of primer, next Black OE color, then Primer/body filler then a real thick coat of yellow. I have tried some Nasty paint remover I purchased at Home Depot it is called Jasco Paint Remover. Make sure you wear gloves, safety glasses and long sleeve shirt!!! The first time I used it, I was home alone and thought I would get some done. I grabbed a brush and when I pulled it from the can, it flicked some of the stuff in my face, just missed my eye but WOW:eek: did it burn,:censored: I dropped everything and ran for the sink and washed it off, Be careful. ;) The stuff worked great getting the yellow off but not the primer nor the OE coat.

Here are some pics from today.

Progress since yesterday! No More Yellow!!! Sorry to all you guys that like yellow, but I couldn't stand it. I have alway had and liked black Jeeps! Still have yellow doors though:( Should have them stripped by next week. I still have some body filler to do on a few of the panels to make them look right. Here is what the Jeep looks like now. I like the 1.25 inch body lift with the 2.5 Pro Comp lift, I don't think I will go any higher. O well back to work!:chug:

looking good, lot of hard work, well done.

I won't take your color preference personally.

Off to the paint shop!!!!!

Just dropped by the Paint Shop today so I thought I would post an update. I guess my welding warped the sides a little. I am really excited, and can't wait to start putting it back together. I hope I can remember where everything goes! Here's the pics!:D

You have removed quite a bit of sheetmetal at one time. Be real careful to get it all back together and lined up right. Thats some nice work your doing.
these are great pics to show people the right way to fix their floors! i wont mention any names but there are more than 1 jeeps on here with "new" 1/4" marine plywood floors in them ...geees

great job brother!

Thank You for the kind words, man this is killing me waiting on it to come back from the paint shop. I took the replacement fender in on Friday and they said they hope to have it done by the end of next week!!!:chug::chug:

I know I have been going a little overboard replacing most of the metal but I plan on keeping this for a long time. I have been wanting to replace the Jeep I had in college that I totaled out in a late night crash, rolled it 1.5 times at 60+ miles an hour with no seat belt, lucky to be here today. It was an 1983 CJ7 Black Renegade and was so much fun to drive, when I was sitting in the hospital I vowed to replace it some day. I have owned 2 Wranglers since and it just was not the same. I believe that is why I have been so focused on doing it right and making it last.

I understand guys using plywood to patch the floors, many of them just want to use the Jeep to wheel in and I can fully understand that!:chug: I used to wheel my old Renegade and it was a blast. I am hoping to build another one in a few years to wheel with but I plan on keeping this one on all 4 for a long time!!! :D
