Build Thread The '80 FrankenJeep frame off reassembly

Build Thread The '80 FrankenJeep frame off reassembly
Spent most of the day polishing the soft top windows up a bit. Not quite where I wanna be with em, but they're much better than they were. If I get to feeling rather industrious next weekend I may hit em again - otherwise, I'll probly just wait till spring. Once I got the top cleaned up I stuck it back on the Jeep so I could lather it real good with some Protect All. Seems like really good stuff. Then I thought it might be a good time for a little more aggressive shake down run. Drove it over to my Mom's - bout a 40 minute run with speeds anywhere from 25 to 70.

Once I hit the interstate, I figured no time like the present to see if something's gonna break, loosen, pop, stretch, or just disappear..... so I ran her up to an indicated 70. Waze says I was doing 64 - either way, I was good with it. I'll crawl under it tomorrow and check for loose hardware and such..... I had forgotten how freakin loud mud tires are..... they gotta go.

Took this just before I left to go home, and right before it rained.

Now that this has been rained on, it's ruined. It got wet. It got dirty. It's no good anymore. But - my "mall use only" D-rings are ok!!

Your Jeep sure looks great! I always enjoy your posts. That gauge is so clean we can see your reflection. And at 65, your engine runs really, really cool, plus great fuel economy, since it runs on empty. Seriously I think you mentioned some gauge problems a while back, but I couldn't resist. Sure love the wheel and shift knobs!

Thank you -

Yeah, it does run a tad cool.... I gotta get the gauges sorted out. It would be expensive to have these repaired, but I may hafts bite the bullet and do it.

I read on another forum, (I think), that Omix has new improved gauges that actually work. Might be something to check out. We ordered a set two years ago and they didn't work at all.

Man that’s sweet glad your enjoying it, if you feel the need to throw it away let me know lol

I’ll look at it when I get home - if it’s not too water spotted I may keep it......

Well, I had the first fuel mileage check tonight. Filled her up the other day, and this afternoon I had almost 80 miles on the tank of fuel. Filled it back up and did the math. Considering the fact that I believe I need smaller main jets in the carb, and I've been playing with the skinny pedal a good bit, I still managed just over 17mpg.... now I know many get better than that with a AMC 304 , I was pleased. I wouldn't have been surprised to see it at 10.

Wait... What??

Wow that’s pretty good considering the barn door aero dynamics of a CJ

And the vigor with which I’ve been working the skinny pedal....... now - to see just how many mpg’s I can wring out of it.

Went up on the parkway this afternoon after work to take a few pics of the Jeep before it rusts away after getting rained on the other day. Got about 5 miles in and lost a brake line. The flexible one at the wheel. Front right. Pulled in the lookout I had in mind, hit the brakes and the peddle went to the floor. I knew what it was, so needless to say I didn’t stop - just headed back to the house. Nice and easy right back to the garage.

I hate brakes.

Amazing how easy the drive home was with a manual tranny and parking brake. Easy peasy. I was all like swivel-headed watching for potential emergency stop situations. Found none .

Lol dang I bet you are really tired of bleeding brakes now :(

I will be soon - I knew the other three lines were due for replacement in the near future, but dang - I figure I replaced the first one like 100 miles ago. So the other theee old one will go this round. I’ll have the same shop make em. 25 bucks a line ain’t too bad for quality work.

I would like to hereby officially thank everyone for not busting me out for being a moron. I proudly stated I would be replacing the other flexible brake lines at the remaining three wheels...... LMAO - there’s only one more. The rear lines are hard lines at the wheels. The flexible for the rear is in the center, and I replaced it during the rebuild. So my $75 brake line replacement just went to $25. Go me. I will admit to another knucklehead move. I went out after dinner and took the broken line off to take it to the hydraulic shop, and while I was out there I stuck my head under the rear wheel well to check the length of the broken one to the one that didn’t exist. I saw the hard line come toward the hub, so I leaned further in. It kept going ........ I thought “where the heck is the flexible part??????” Then, there it was. Loudly and proudly I had the Homer Simpson “DOHHH” moment.

After I quit laughing at myself, I went ahead and bolted the fog lights to the brush guard.

Once again, I cracked myself up - I knew better, I swear I did....... but for some reason I thought since it was kinda dark out I’d use the flash on my phone.

***PSA for 8 Oct, 2018 - Do NOT use a flash at night to take a pic of the front of a vehicle.***

At least one in a state that requires a front license plate..... Homer move number 2:

Grinning, but not laughing. (well, not rolling in the floor laughing anyway) Those are what the wife calls "stupid hubby tricks". I tell mine that I have to work very hard at them just for her amusement.

Those shift knobs came out darn good. I was at a local car show a few weeks ago and there was a early 60s Ford pickup there with a 4 speed that had an old glass door knob on the end of the shift lever. I'm thinking a couple of those would add a certain bit of "elegance" to an old CJ.

Hey shum8 if you had 4 wheel disc you would have 3 flex hoses in the rear plus the 2 up front

At the moment, good thing I don’t. I was glad to see the braided brake lines, but they must be old. They both broke at the exact same place.
