Was going to replace the front output seal on my Dana 300 Transfer Case . Dropped the skid plate, unfastened the front drive shaft, drained the gear oil out, got the yoke nut off and removed the yoke. All was going so well but that old seal was in their tight!! Finally got it out without damaging anything, dug the new seal out and started to put it in. Wrong size!!!! I scratched my head, looked at the part number again, checked the catalog, then realized I had ordered an INPUT seal, dang!!
Anywho, called all the parts stores within 50 miles and of course no one had it in stock. Was going to order one on line but that usually takes several days. Finally found a parts store in town and they said they could have one in by tomorrow. Soooo we will see.

Yea!! Success, my "output" shaft seal came in yesterday. I put it in and got everything put back together then took it for a test drive. So far so good, not a single drip.
I am a little apprehensive though as I did notice the bearing had just a little "slop" in it. But since it is going to the front diff which won't see as much use as the rear I hope it will give me some driving time before I have to tear into the Transfer Case for a rebuild.

Installing the seal was the easy part. Getting to it not so much.
It would of been pretty easy if all the bolts were not rusted tight.
First step was putting a jack under the tranny, then removing the skid plate, [belly pan, crossmember], draining the gear oil, unfasten the drive shaft at the output yoke, I used a piece of wire to suspend it from the frame and out of the way. Would be a good idea to wrap some tape around the U joint to keep the caps on. Loosen the nut on the yoke, I used an impact wrench but it came off fairly easy, it takes a 1 1/8 socket, pull the splined yoke off the output shaft, mine slid right off, no puller, banging required. You may not be so lucky. I then pulled the seal using a tool from Harbour Freight.https://www.harborfreight.com/seal-puller-with-2-tips-63039.html It's nothing fancy, just a thingie with hooks on the end that you can leverage the old seal out. My seal was really in there tight I just went round and round prying until it popped out. It had some sort of sealer on it which made it tight.
I then cleaned everything up, checked for any rust, scratches, any pitting, etc. [there was none].
Went to put the new seal on and realized I had purchased the wrong one. Luckily a local parts store had it to me the next day.
Got the correct seal, put a little gear lube on the rubber part, stuck it on and used a home made driver to "lightly" tap it on with a mallet, keeping it straight as it went in. I think a piece of PVC would work just as well. You want it as close to the outside size as the seal as possible. You probably want it flush but mine went a little deeper, maybe 1/16" but I think it will be ok. Assembly is just the reverse of removal.
Good luck, it's a pretty easy fix.

Thanks, my Transmission and tc are currently out of the jeep so hopefully mine will go easier.
But that was helpful since I didn't know what size socket to get.

Your quite welcome. You've got the hard part done!
It would be a good time to do the shift rod seals if they are leaking.

Yeah, like I tell my wife "aint nuthin easy".
I was lucky, mine came right off. Kinda caught me off guard actually.
Did you try an impact wrench? I used a cheapo "electric" one from Harbour Freight.
 
I bought a Jeep. 1983 CJ7 Renegade . Needs some work but that is why I got it.

The whole thing loomed black when I started! I'm amazed that some of the parts were actually silver in finish!
I used a paint scraper for most of the work and was amazed at how much came off of it and the frame.

When reinstalling the tranny and tc combo should I bolt it to the crossmember before install or after with the driveshafts connected?
Right now the engine us only supported by the mounts. There hasn't been any need for extra bracing or lifting the i6.

I would connect the Transmission and tc to the engine first, connect drive shaft then the crossmember.
You will need some "wiggle room" when reinstalling the tranny which you wouldn't have if it was already bolted to the crossmember.
 
The way I have always done it is install Transmission , transfer then cross member than driveshaft.
