How do you decipher if it is a Laredo or Renegadefrom the firewall tag?

There is no letters or numbers on the vin tag that would ID a Laredo or Renegade with the exception of 79 Renegade Silver Anniversary that has the 8C paint code. If you check the 79 FSM the 8C paint code isn't listed.

The Laredo, and Renegade is an appearance package only.
