When I was at napa a couple of weeks ago the largest I could get they said was 85 amp. So I went with that for a 85 CJ

Got to piddlin around with CJ stuff this weekend - decided it was time to tackle the visors..... dug out the gray ones, he’d em in place to check fit, and wouldn’t ya know it - the security box is in the way by like 3/8”.... also, being YJ visors, they still don’t have enough offset to clear the mounting plates for the side bars tying the roll bar to the windshield frame. That fix will be easy - the other not so much.

I’m gonna pull the mounting arm adjacent to the box out of the visor, cut and weld a bit to recontour the radius, and that will take care of the mounting. The visor itself has a fold line built in to allow it to fold past the side bar - and I’m gonna need another one for the box. That will take some stitch removal and open visor surgery....... after reworking the soft top this oughta be fairly easy...... I mean - What could happen???”

Seems like the simplest things turn into ordeals on these jeeps...

After you get the visor put back together (two sided tape is magical) a cobbler could put a nice finished stitch on it.

Yeah, I could just not put em up - I rarely use em...... but it looks unfinished without em. And yes, I seem to complicate everything I do. The visors never crossed my mind when I built the box....... Then again, it’s as narrow as it could be so the visors would have lost anyways......

Not to mention the fact that if I’d just left everything stock I would have these challenges

We had a dry weekend, so I decided to go ahead and mount the hood support. Since this is a fiberglass hood, none of the mounting hardware is here but the rod and mounting plate. All other pieces are MIA.

Sooo, I decided to get the pivot end ready to accept the rod mount, so I grabbed the rod and placed it about where I wanted it to live.

Drilled the holes for the mounting screws, then started working on the clearance “divot” for the ball end.

At this point I decided I didn’t like the ball end rubbing on the fiberglass..... I needed a backer plate with a more substantial bearing surface that could hold some grease. Grabbed a piece of scrap, marked out what I wanted, and started with the grinder.

I know - the holes aren’t on the lines....... the lines were from a previous part and had no bearing here.....

All painted and ready to go.

Since I don’t have the other bracketry to hold it up when not in use, I decided to be a tad creative ( pronounced “La-zy”). I haven’t stuck the others up yet as the epoxy holding the first one in place wasn’t set by dark, so that will wait till tomorrow. I have three rare earth magnets that I believe will hold the other end up....... if not, I’ll be making a couple brackets.......

Man, you know how many people would have just jacked that into the hood without a second thought. Great simple idea and excellent execution. You'd be surprised how well rare earth magnets will hold. They are one of the biggest tricks we use in the car audio industry to hold on trim and beauty panels without having hardware on the face of the panel. Even with heavy bass, they hold awesome. Recess them and set with a good epoxy.

I even used some one a set of barn doors in my living room that I installed. The dog would use her nose to open the doors and I didn't want to put physical hardware on the face of nice doors, a couple small strike plates and recessed magnets and boom, solidly held shut and stealthy.

I’m also a big fan of the rare earth magnets - but they’d never crossed my mind for this till I saw em at the hardware store....... I figure it’s worth 5 bucks to see if they’ll do the job [emoji106]

Ok - Got the good prop project finished. For now. I had epoxied the first magnet in the recess with a nice two part epoxy - that sucker will be there forever. Then super glued the other two in place.

By the way - ignore the two screw heads in that pic - they really aren’t there. It would appear that I drilled the recess too deep and had to attach a backer plat from behind, but it’s just an illusion. Anyway, then I got the prop rod brackets nice and greasy, put em in place on the rod, and mounted the assembly.

Yay, go me. Then I realized I was missing something

No sweat - grabbed some scrap, the angle grinder, welder, and went at it. Now keep in mind, this was a couple beers in cause I hadn’t planned on welding anything - just a couple screws. Soooo, I mixed some lazy in with the barley pops, and here’s what I came up with.

Here’s the last time I will have to prop the hood up with a stupid level

You weren't kidding when you say you like to it the hard way. I figured some flat stock and a hole in it and bolt it in, similar to stock. Not you, no one else will have that!

That little gizmo looks like it might work better than OEM prop rod holder.

You are correct - an OEM similar piece would have been easy enough - but this took less than an hour to rig up. Besides, the square tubing was handy and I don’t have any flat at the moment....

Finally made it over to the pick n save to scrounge up a couple hydraulic cylinders from a Kia Soul. The OEM "struts" for my hard top rear window are full of rust "powder" - not to mention uglier than home made sin..... so I wanted to swap em for hydraulics. After roaming around last weekend,eè, I found a Kia Soul that had just the right length. Surprise! It was half price Sat and there was an hour and a half wait to get out... so I waited till yesterday. Yay - the Soul was gone........ so I grabbed a pair that were nice and clean, but a tad too long. This would dictate the lower mtg bracket be dropped about an inch and a half or so. Hit the lower brackets with the impact, and promptly broke three of the four bolts [emoji35]. Got the stubs drilled,thru, and soaking in PB Blaster, so we'll see. Easy outs will be employed tomorrow. In the mean time, got the brackets gabbed up. Since there is a nut plate in the top, I need to get the broken bolts out and use the existing holes. Decided that a couple pieces of square tube cut to shape would do it. Harvested the mounting studs from the brackets, and started cutting. I'm now ready to weld.....

Ready for welding and paint....

Ya, just because I had 2” tube scrap handy. And this project was a bust - the pistons are too strong. I think I’ll go back to the original springs - just need to work out how to attach - OEM hardware and sleeves are in the wind
